Based on the letters of Colonel Robert G. Shaw. Shaw was an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War
who volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudices of both the
enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks), and of his own fellow officers.

Nel 1863 in piena guerra di secessione, al Capitano Robert Gould Shaw, viene affidato il compito di addestrare e
comandare, sotto il grado di Colonnello, il 54º reggimento volontari di fanteria composto in prevalenza da ex schiavi
di colore. Inizialmente presi poco sul serio e derisi, sapranno dimostrarsi dei soldati coraggiosi che lottano per la
libertà della propria patria. Grazie al loro valore sul campo, i membri del 54º avranno l'onore di aprire le
ostilità contro Fort Wagner, inespugnabile roccaforte sudista. La battaglia non sarà un successo, ma la loro
gloria ed il loro onore saranno comunque grandi.
